At Integrated Systems Europe 2024, BSS Audio<\/a> revolutionized open architecture digital signal processing with the launch of its all-new, next-generation Soundweb OMNI<\/a> platform. Featuring the most powerful processor ever introduced by BSS, Soundweb OMNI sets a new standard in open architecture DSP and caters to the diverse needs of hospitality, large venues, corporate, education and government installations.<\/p>\n

The Soundweb OMNI family combines enterprise-grade processors, flexible I\/O expanders, Dante\/AES67 networked audio, an onboard scripting engine developed by AMX, and a vast library of processing objects, including media playback, AEC, VoIP, and more.<\/p>\n

We sat down with Phil Scobee, Director of Product Management, Installed Audio to take a deeper look into what makes Soundweb OMNI the most robust and flexible DSP solution on the market.<\/p>\n

The Soundweb OMNI Series has a storied heritage. Can you share what drove its development?<\/strong>
\nSure. BSS just turned 45 years old and if you look back on its history, it’s pretty clear that the brand has been innovating signal processing since its earliest days. When its founders Chas Brooke and Stan Gould launched its initial products like the MCS 200, the first-ever modular crossover system or the DPR-402<\/a> Compressor\/Limiter, they knew there was a defined market for precision-crafted, professional-grade products that were powerful, durable, and reliable.<\/p>\n

BSS continued this tradition by launching the world\u2019s first open architecture distributed DSP solution, the Soundweb Original series and followed it up with the Soundweb London<\/a> series, one of the most specified products in the history of signal processing.<\/p>\n

Now, we continue that legacy with the introduction of Soundweb OMNI. It builds on everything that made our legacy DSPs so popular and raises the bar with more powerful processing, increased flexibility, and streamlined configuration.<\/p>\n

Which Soundweb OMNI features are resonating most intently with the market?
\n<\/strong>When we were designing what would eventually become the Soundweb OMNI platform, we took the customer feedback that we’d been gathering for years to determine what improvements could be made to an already well-received product. Our goal was to offer next-generation enhancements while continuing to support our customers’ best work in designing, specifying, installing, and programming these systems.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest takeaways was to remove the pain points that are often found in traditional system design and to build a platform that could combine purpose-built hardware with intuitive software. We also needed a solution that offered the flexibility of both centralized and distributed DSP topologies, allowing system designers to choose the appropriate topology for their unique installation.<\/p>\n

And we wanted to make sure we were supporting the needs of system programmers and integrated HControl, HARMAN’s human-readable, standards-based, and developer-friendly API.<\/p>\n

Can you share the cool factor of these newly launched DSPs?
\n<\/strong>We have been demonstrating the new hardware, literally across the globe, and no matter where we go, we continue to receive positive feedback. Soundweb OMNI includes two flagship DSPs, the 512p and 256p<\/a>. They both deliver exceptional power and high Dante\/AES67 channel counts, up to 512×512 at 96kHz. This processing power surpasses our previous generation products and positions Soundweb OMNI to meet the complex demands of most installs out there today with plenty of power to be future-ready to take on the AV\/IT needs of tomorrow.<\/p>\n

What about the new I\/O expansion devices. They\u2019re flexible and scalable \u2013 correct?
\n<\/strong>We wanted to ensure that no matter what your install or project, we were providing a solution that could easily scale to whatever your needs are. So, we built two I\/O Expanders, the 32e and 16e<\/a>, that provide unmatched I\/O flexibility and scalability.<\/p>\n

We also made each audio I\/O port format configurable as either analog or stereo AES3 digital. Additionally, certain audio I\/O ports and all GPIO ports are \u201cdirection configurable\u201d as either inputs or outputs and all ports are easily managed on an individual port basis.<\/p>\n

Can you talk about the new AVX suite of software and how it assists in configuring and controlling these systems?
\n<\/strong>It was important to have well-designed software to make management of the hardware simple to elevate the development and user experience. The new AVX suite does that and includes two extremely user-friendly applications. Just about everyone that has seen the software has been pretty excited about its potential.<\/p>\n

For system diagramming, device configuration, network management, and custom UI design, we developed AVX Architect. It’s a desktop app that allows users to add an unlimited number of processors and expanders to a single project file, while still enjoying the simplicity of a true, single canvas for device configuration.<\/p>\n

AVX Control is a lightweight software app that offers control and monitoring of Soundweb OMNI devices across a variety of platforms through custom UIs. These custom UIs work not only with Soundweb OMNI devices, but also with Crown DCi<\/a> amplifiers and previous generation Soundweb London<\/a> devices, thanks to protocol-bridging technology developed by AMX.<\/p>\n

It sounds like Soundweb OMNI has been well received since its initial debut?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nWe have been overwhelmed by the positive response received since launching. BSS has some of the most loyal and vocal customers in this industry and both long-time and newer customers are telling us that this product has the power and the potential to set a new standard for next-level, open architecture DSP. We couldn’t be more pleased and look forward to continuing to enhance our portfolio to meet and surpass whatever needs and requirements evolve along the way.<\/p>\n
