{"id":1473,"date":"2016-08-08T07:08:20","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T14:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/?p=1473"},"modified":"2016-08-26T12:54:02","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T19:54:02","slug":"electronic-violinist-lindsey-stirling-an-interview-with-front-of-house-engineer-rob-mcwhorter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/entertainment\/touring\/electronic-violinist-lindsey-stirling-an-interview-with-front-of-house-engineer-rob-mcwhorter\/","title":{"rendered":"Electronic Violinist Lindsey Stirling: An Interview with Front of House Engineer Rob McWhorter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>(Photography: Adam Elmakias)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Virtuoso violinist, YouTube sensation and New York Times Best Selling author, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindseystirling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lindsey Stirling<\/a> recently embarked on a North American tour and, just before she took off, we had an opportunity to meet her front of house (FOH) engineer and production manager, Rob McWhorter.<\/p>\n<p>L<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1478\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSCN0122.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"268\" \/>indsey began studying classical violin as a child and was catapulted into the limelight as a performer in the 2010 season of America\u2019s Got Talent, when she became known as\u201cThe Hip Hop Violinist.\u201d Although she was voted off the show during the quarterfinals, her unique fusion of Celtic folk and classical violin, dubstep and dance struck a nerve. Lindsey\u2019s signature sci-fi- and fantasy-themed videos have garnered more than a billion YouTube views, while her hits have topped the Billboard charts, and she\u2019s enjoyed a series of sold-out concert tours. Her third studio album, \u201cBrave Enough,\u201d is slated for release on August 19.<\/p>\n<p>During her live show, Lindsey twists and twirls alongside four dancers while switching between four violins. \u201cThe fact that Lindsey can play as stably as she does while she\u2019s moving is amazing, but working on her violins can still be complicated,\u201d said Rob. \u201cA violin is an acoustically based instrument but, with the band\u2019s EDM, dubstep, electronic and pop dance style influences, we have a lot of volume. We can\u2019t keep a live mic in check with Lindsey and instead need to run all of her violins direct.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1477\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSCN0132-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"176\" \/>\u201cAlways having a direct signal means there\u2019s a lot you need to do to make the sound as big and natural as possible,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the key elements of Lindsey\u2019s violin sound is reverb, and I have a pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/lexiconpro.com\/en-US\/products\/pcm96\" target=\"_blank\">Lexicon PCM 96s<\/a> on this tour to help give me the biggest, most spacious and ambient reverb as possible. That way, I can run them very wet and still sound natural.\u201d Rob also deploys the Lexicon PCM 96s for Lindsey\u2019s vocals and the drum kit.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out Lindsey\u2019s violin sound, Rob uses two <a href=\"http:\/\/dbxpro.com\/en-US\/products\/676\" target=\"_blank\">dbx 676<\/a> Tube Microphone Preamp Channel Strips. \u201cI have slightly different settings for each violin\u2014various combinations of reverb, EQ, compression and different pre-amps\u2014and two of the four instruments rely on dbx processing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1481\" style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1481\" class=\"wp-image-1481\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/k2-hakali.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"238\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography: Mikael Hakali<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Having worked with Lindsey since her debut tour four years ago and also serving as her production manager, Rob uses JBL speakers for the onstage monitoring. \u201cAll of our monitors are JBL, and we\u2019ve been using them since day one. In the four years that we\u2019ve had them, I\u2019ve never had to replace a driver. We use a drum sub, wedges at the keyboard position and side fills for the dancers. That way, if any of their IEMs go out, I know they\u2019ll still be able to hear the mix. The JBLs are solid and never let me down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asking Rob to define Lindsey\u2019s unlikely amalgam of styles and how it impacts his mix, he said, \u201cShe has really carved out a totally unique niche that can\u2019t be classified. I try to create a different vibe for every song that fits the theme of what\u2019s going on with the video, the costuming, the dancing, the music and the energy in the room.
