{"id":1483,"date":"2016-08-15T09:02:49","date_gmt":"2016-08-15T16:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/?p=1483"},"modified":"2016-08-26T08:33:11","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T15:33:11","slug":"faces-of-harman-sara-zapata-jbl-technician","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/harman-pro\/faces-of-harman-sara-zapata-jbl-technician\/","title":{"rendered":"Faces of HARMAN: Sara Zapata, JBL Technician"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Only a scant handful of HARMAN employees have celebrated their 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary at the company, and among them is JBL Technician Sara Zapata, a treasured member of the Northridge campus engineering community.<\/p>\n<p>Sara was only 21 years old when she first applied for a job at HARMAN and was initially hired to work on JBL speaker grills. After <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1498 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/0165_001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"331\" \/>seven\u00a0years, she was assigned to the company\u2019s loudspeaker production lines, where she helped build furniture of various shapes and sizes. \u201cI was the lead person running the line for almost 25 years,\u201d said Sara. \u201cThen I was given the opportunity to join the engineering department, where I\u2019ve been for about 12 years. I\u2019ve learned so much and really love it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the four decades since Sara joined HARMAN, the Southern California division has changed considerably, consolidating several Los\u00a0Angeles area facilities at the Northridge campus and relocating manufacturing outside of the region. About seven years ago, when JBL\u00a0moved a portion of production to Tijuana, Mexico, Sara was transferred to the R&amp;D department, where she became a specialist, building transducer prototypes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1486 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/DSCN0155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"230\" \/>\u201cEngineering develops the design, mechanical engineering makes the first sample and then I create prototypes in my lab,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen\u00a0the completed product is tested and ready to manufacture, we go to Tijuana and teach the employees there how to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the years, Sara has worked on dozens of products, but she is particularly partial to JBL\u2019s revolutionary D2 Dual Driver (D2430K),\u00a0which debuted at NAMM in 2012 for use in the VTX Line Array Series.\u00a0\u201cWhen I see it on display,I still admire it,\u201d said Sara. \u201cAll of our finished speakers look beautiful to me, really. It\u2019s so nice to see the products and think of how I had a small part in them being there.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1497 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/0163_001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"321\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sara was born in Michoac\u00e1n, Mexico, spent her earliest years in Guadalajara and moved with her family to Tijuana at age seven. When Sara turned 14, she and her mother, two older sisters and brother came to the United States and settled in Los Angeles.\u00a0Two years later, her father joined them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very hard when you come here as an immigrant,\u201d she said. \u201cWe had nothing\u2014just a bunch of dreams to be successful. My sisters and I had to start working right away and didn\u2019t even go to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1505 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/0176_001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"296\" \/>For seven years, she and one of her sisters worked at Melco Wire and studied English at night. But, after a work accident caused a spark to land in her eye, Sara\u2019s family urged her to find another job and, in 1976, she joined HARMAN.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings turned out well, and I\u2019m so full of gratitude,\u201d said Sara. \u201cI really love my work; I love the environment and the people I work with. I married a man I met working at HARMAN; we\u2019ve raised three children together and bought a house. The company also made it possible for my daughter to go to university, which is a big part of why I\u2019m so grateful. My daughter now has a Master\u2019s degree, is an English teacher and hopes to\u00a0get her doctorate. I\u2019m very proud of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When not working on transducers, Sara enjoys <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1504 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/0173_001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"243\" \/>relaxing with her husband, going on walks and bike rides, babysitting their three grandchildren and, on special occasions, taking them to Disneyland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also really love to cook Mexican food the way I learned from my mother,\u201d she said. Her specialty?
