I recommend asking a variety of questions to envision the client\u2019s needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What is the room\u2019s primary use?<\/strong> This will help dictate your system design. A background music system in a restaurant, an audio system in a classroom, and a high-energy setup in a fitness club or bar have very different requirements. The application defines speaker size, model, and quantity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is needed at the listening position?<\/strong> Background music applications, like those common in cafes or retail stores, typically require much lower SPL than applications where speech intelligibility is important or where ambient sound levels are higher, such as in houses of worship, convention centers, or airports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Will the space be used for alternative applications?<\/strong> This is also a worthy consideration such as a boardroom that might be used to watch the big game that might require more headroom or other considerations to ensure the room sounds great no matter what it\u2019s being used for.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What budget parameters do we have to work with?<\/strong> The client\u2019s budget will have a big impact on the design such as what performance levels can be utilized, how many listening spaces can be served, and other budget-impacting questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ceiling Architecture and Sound Dispersion\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Q: How do ceilings impact sound dispersion and coverage?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> Flat ceilings generally fall into two categories: tile-grid or hard, thick ceilings. In both cases, ceiling height and desired SPL dictate speaker count and model choice. Higher ceilings reduce SPL and speech intelligibility at listener level.<\/p>\n<p>For taller ceilings between 18&#8242; and 24&#8242;, specialty speakers like <a href=\"https:\/\/jblpro.com\/en-US\/products\/control-47hc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JBL\u2019s Control 47HC<\/a> high-ceiling model offers narrow dispersion. JBL offers both. With backcans, install housing and cabling during construction, then fit the speakers after ceiling work finishes. This prevents dust and paint buildup. Speakers with integrated enclosures can be installed into a finished ceiling, offering more flexibility for repositioning.
