Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band\u2019 at 50"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This summer commemorates the 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Beatles\u2019 \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band,\u201d a record regarded by many as the most influential rock album of all time. Generations of fans and music critics have celebrated the album\u2019s disparate musical influences and lyrical content while scrutinizing the nuances of producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick\u2019s original mono and stereo mixes.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s\u201d golden anniversary, George Martin\u2019s son, Giles Martin, recently released an acclaimed remix of the album, along with rare rehearsal takes and outtakes. Giles painstakingly searched through the Abbey Road Studios archive for the original recordings and session notes to create new stereo versions of the tracks. The 1967 stereo version was completed in a mere three days as an afterthought to the initial mono mix, and George Martin is said to have always lamented the hastiness of its completion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4913\" style=\"width: 132px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4913\" class=\"wp-image-4913\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Slide2-e1501085819654.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"122\" height=\"245\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AKG D20B cardioid dynamic microphone, the model used to mic the Beatles&#8217; bass drum and other instruments at Abbey Road<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.studer.ch\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akg.com\/pro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AKG<\/a> equipment played a significant role in the original recording of \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s\u201d and, at HARMAN Professional Solutions, we can\u2019t help but reflect on our own participation in the historic tracks. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jblpro.com\/www\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JBL<\/a>, AKG and Studer are each celebrating approximately 70 years in the audio industry and, in addition to \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s,\u201d are proud to have supported countless brilliant performances throughout the decades.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, the pinnacle of studio technology was recording onto a Studer J37 four-track recorder in Studio Two at Abbey Road Studios. Without larger recorders, tracks repeatedly needed to be premixed and bounced to another four-track machine. Multiple generations of mixes were required to realize the final complex arrangements of \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s.\u201d Returning to the 1967 four-tracks, Giles Martin was able to reconstruct the songs using the Beatles\u2019 original takes, without any generational degradation. The result is the most pristine version of the album ever heard.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4916\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4916\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4916\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/geoffadjusted2sml-e1501031828476.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"216\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Legendary engineer Geoff Emerick using JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time the classic record has been reconceptualized. Ten years ago, in honor of \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s\u201d 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, Geoff Emerick produced and engineered a remake of the record for the BBC. Musician and activist Bob Geldof suggested producing radio and television documentaries of Emerick rerecording \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s\u201d with the original equipment and featuring some of the top artists of the time.<\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the project, Emerick assembled as much of the original gear used on the 1967 album as possible. He was able to reunite two original Studer J37 one-inch, four-track tape recorders and two original EMI mixing consoles, provided by Mark Knopfler and Lenny Kravitz. Emerick was also able to borrow vintage AKG microphones from the AKG Museum in Vienna, Austria. Bryan Adams, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, Travis and other popular artists each performed a song for the project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4914\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4914\" class=\"wp-image-4914\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Slide3-e1501031356366.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4914\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Studer J37<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe first rule of the recordings was that we were going to have fun,\u201d said Emerick. \u201cWhen I can, I still workin analog, so we were going to [record on] tape. That means if we mess up in the middle of the rhythm track, we go back to the beginning and start recording again. For me, the performance has to come almost in its entirety from the studio floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emerick also deployed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jblpro.com\/www\/products\/recording-broadcast\/lsr6300-series#.WVQv_BMrJEQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JBL LSR6300 Series<\/a> studio monitors for the project. \u201cWhen I\u2019m mixing, I like to feel that I\u2019ve captured a moment,\u201d said Emerick. \u201cTo me, there\u2019s only one mix, and that\u2019s the real mix. Like lots of engineers, I was having problems when I\u2019d listen to mixes outside of the control room. Often, the relationship between instruments and vocals is not consistent. However, since I\u2019ve started mixing on the JBL LSR Series, the perspective in the mastering room has been exactly the same as in the control room. They have that quality and punch I\u2019m used to getting from the drums and the bass, and the guitars of course\u2014that really good, solid sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten years later, as the Beatles\u2019 \u201cSgt.
