Currently playing at the historic Walter Kerr Theater on Broadway, the musical has already won multiple awards, including a Tony for Best Lighting Design in a Musical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think of the lighting design of <em>Hadestown<\/em> as a visual score for the music,\u201d King says of his approach to designing the show. \u201cJust as there are different instruments with different timbres, I am doing the same thing visually. I have different types of lights, I have color, I have angle, I have movement; and I am using that to compose a visual language for the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7047\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a class=\"lightbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.martin.com\/en\/product_families\/mac-encore\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7047\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7047\" src=\"https:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mac_encore_wrm_vert_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mac_encore_wrm_vert_medium.jpg 375w, https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mac_encore_wrm_vert_medium-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2019\/09\/mac_encore_wrm_vert_medium-160x160.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learn more about the Martin MAC Encore fixture, used extensively to support the Broadway musical, Hadestown.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>King applauds the MAC Encore fixtures in particular for providing rich yet subtle colors, a key element in composing a lighting design that complements the depth of the music without distracting from the action on stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially with the Encore, one of my favorite things is the color fidelity,\u201d says King. \u201cThe color is so specific, and I love specific color. <em>Hadestown<\/em>\u2019s color palette is very restrained\u2014there are many shades of white, it sort of runs from warm to cool, and the Encore has such fantastic color fidelity that all the lights match all the time, and I&#8217;m confident in their ability to maintain that over a long run like we&#8217;ll have with <em>Hadestown<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on Broadway, it\u2019s not enough for a light to provide great illumination. Just like the hushed audiences watching the performances, the equipment itself must respect the space and the art by contributing as little noise as possible. For this reason, King appreciates the MAC Encore Series\u2019 near-silent operation.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7048\" src=\"https:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/hadestown3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"302\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the best things about the Encore is it&#8217;s deathly quiet,\u201d King says. \u201cNevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, our sound designers, joke with me that it&#8217;s actually our incandescent lights in this rig that are louder than the moving lights, because of things like lamp buzz and harmonics. So in a space as small as the Walter Kerr, where you can hear a pin drop in the quiet moments, having a really quiet light like the Encore is hugely important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Hadestown<\/em> runs until July 2020 at the Walter Kerr Theater in New York City.
