Doug, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harmanpro.com\/insights\/enterprise\/large-venues\/harman-innovator-spotlight-ralph-hyde-jbl-speaker-engineer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Hyde<\/a>, was recruited by JBL back in 1988. He and Ralph had both been working at Electro-Voice at the time. Doug\u2019s particular expertise was heat dissipation, a key element in determining how much power a speaker can handle. Knowing this, JBL brought Doug on to use his expertise to increase JBL\u2019s power handling.<\/p>\n<p>During this same period, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harmanpro.com\/insights\/harman-pro\/harman-innovator-spotlight-gerald-stanley-crown-amplifier-engineer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gerald Stanley<\/a> and others were working to push the power capabilities of Crown amplifiers, resulting in what Doug describes as a sort of \u201chorserace\u201d of power between amplifier and loudspeaker manufacturers during the period. Amps could output more power, so speakers needed to handle more power. Then when the speakers had higher power ratings, the amplifier manufacturers worked to up their wattage output. Doug admits, \u201cFor the time being, Gerald is winning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-811\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Doug-and-dual-coil-drivers-circa-1997-720x450.jpg\" alt=\"Doug and dual coil drivers circa 1997\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Doug-and-dual-coil-drivers-circa-1997-720x450.jpg 720w, https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Doug-and-dual-coil-drivers-circa-1997-1170x731.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Doug-and-dual-coil-drivers-circa-1997-340x213.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Doug invented a number of new technologies during this period that resulted in loudspeakers that could handle higher and higher power levels. First, Doug developed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com.na\/patents\/US5042072\" target=\"_blank\">self-cooled loudspeaker<\/a>, a major innovation and step up in power handling at the time, and then a few years later, he created the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com.na\/patents\/US5748760\" target=\"_blank\">dual coil drive<\/a>. Dual coil technology has become a foundation of JBL\u2019s speaker technology to this day, and 8 of the 20 patents Doug has earned over the years are related to this technology.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, Doug\u2019s career moved to the development of integrated systems. Applying the lessons he learned about head dissipation from his time working on transducers, Doug invented a way to combine a mixer, amplifier and speaker into a single powered PA unit. This became the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jblpro.com\/www\/products\/portable-market#.VzSV0ISDFBd\" target=\"_blank\">JBL EON<\/a>, the portable PA line that now leads the industry. He has since continued to work on a variety of other inventive loudspeaker technologies, including the renowned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jblpro.com\/www\/products\/tour-sound\/vertec-series#.VzSWCYSDFBc\" target=\"_blank\">VerTec<\/a> line array, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jblpro.com\/evo1\/evo_main.htm\" target=\"_blank\">EVO<\/a> intelligent speaker, and the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jblpro.com\/www\/products\/installed-sound\/cbt-series#.VzSWUISDFBc\" target=\"_blank\"> Constant Beamwidth Technology\u2122<\/a> (or CBT) line array column speakers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-810\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.harman.com\/insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC02880-720x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC02880-720x450.jpg 720w, https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC02880-1170x731.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/hpro-web-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/insights\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC02880-340x213.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Outside of work, Doug is a self-proclaimed \u201cgadget head and early adopter.\u201d Doug vividly recalls his first digital projector and digital camera, which both had resolutions of 320 by 240 pixels (0.0768 megapixels). \u201cI had to take out a $4,000 loan to buy that projector in 1991.\u201d Doug recollects that if digital imaging had come along a little earlier (or he was born a little later) he would have gone into that field instead of audio. With both an office and home full of 4K TVs, Doug says he can\u2019t wait for 8K. Doug\u2019s other love is sports cars. His pride and joy is a Special Edition 1991 Mazda Miata in British Racing. \u201cAt the time I really wanted a Mercedes roadster.\u201d Now I am lucky enough to have both. He says the car he really wants now is the rerelease of the Tesla roadster due out by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Doug keeps active with golfing, bowling, swimming, hiking, snorkeling and sailing.
