When Kingsport City Schools began renovations on the historic Buck Van Huss Dome, the largest indoor venue in Kingsport, Tennessee, administrators recognized the need for a new sound system to match the quality of the facility’s upgrades. Originally built in 1967, the Dome’s distinctive Lamella ceiling and expansive floor plan posed a unique acoustic challenge. As part of a broader modernization effort that included new lighting, seating, HVAC and a four-sided video board, the school sought an audio solution capable of delivering consistent clarity and impact throughout the vast space.
To meet these demands, Kingsport City Schools partnered with local integrator Music Doctors, Inc., with support from HARMAN Professional engineers and regional representative James Willis. The team designed a professional-grade sound system anchored by JBL Professional PD6322/66 loudspeakers powered by Crown DCi 4|2400N amplifiers.
“The PD6322s were the right choice for their long throw and high-volume performance,” said Rob Kendrick, System Integrator, Music Doctors, Inc. “Combined with the Crown DCi amplifiers, which gave us bi-amping capability and precise tunings, we were able to achieve the coverage and clarity the Dome demanded. The amps’ versatility allowed us to get optimum performance out of the speakers.”
To complement the main system, JBL AWC159 all-weather loudspeakers were installed as downfills to ensure balanced sound on the court. Their compact design allowed discreet mounting beneath the new scoreboard without obstructing sightlines. For additional flexibility, JBL PRX912 portable stage monitors were provided for live events and assemblies.
The upgraded sound system has transformed the audio experience at the Buck Van Huss Dome, delivering even coverage and intelligibility for audiences, players and faculty alike. “Feedback has been universally positive,” said Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Kingsport City Schools. “The sound complements the four-sided video board perfectly and delivers clear, high-impact audio throughout the Dome.”
With the integration of JBL Professional loudspeakers and Crown amplifiers, Music Doctors successfully modernized a cherished community landmark, providing reliable, high-performance sound that enhances both daily school activities and large-scale sporting events.
