The Opportunity

Kyushu University sought to upgrade the audio system in Inamori Hall to better support lectures, symposiums and international exchange programs within the 300-square-meter venue. Located inside the Inamori Foundation Memorial Hall, the space plays a central role in the university’s academic and cultural activities. After more than a decade of continuous use, the existing system no longer delivered consistent intelligibility or even coverage, particularly for speech-focused events. The university required a solution that could provide clear, balanced sound across the full room while also adapting to a divided-room configuration without compromising performance.

The Solution

Following on-site evaluations and demonstrations, the university selected JBL Professional Intellivox DSX280 HD powered column loudspeakers as the primary system for full-room coverage. Installed on either side of the podium, the digitally steerable columns deliver controlled, even speech reinforcement throughout the hall while maintaining the venue’s interior design through custom finishes.

For divided-room use, JBL Professional CBT 70J-1 column loudspeakers were installed along the side walls and paired with Crown CDi 2 amplifiers to ensure consistent coverage in partitioned configurations. The combination of beam-steering technology and dedicated reinforcement for flexible layouts enables the system to adapt to a variety of academic and event formats while maintaining reliable performance.

The Results

The upgraded JBL Professional and Crown system delivers improved speech clarity, balanced frequency response and more uniform coverage across the entire hall. Sound now reaches the farthest areas of the room with greater consistency, enhancing intelligibility for lectures, ceremonies and discussions. The system also maintains performance when the space is divided, ensuring clear communication in smaller configurations.

With a more controlled and predictable audio environment, Inamori Hall at Kyushu University now better supports its academic and cultural programming with dependable intelligibility, providing a consistent listening experience for audiences and presenters alike.
