The Opportunity

When Baekyangsa Temple, the historic Jogye Order institution behind Lightroom Ulsan, set out to create a groundbreaking digital gallery, the vision was to build more than just a visually captivating experience. The team wanted to create an immersive environment where sound was as integral as the visuals – guiding, enhancing, and enveloping visitors in a fully sensory experience. High ceilings and reflective surfaces inside the space created unique acoustic challenges, making it clear that traditional audio setups would not suffice. Lightroom Ulsan needed a sound system that delivered clarity, immersive power, and consistency, all without compromising architectural aesthetics or projection mapping precision.

The Solution

To meet these creative and technical demands, Kinoton Korea partnered with the Lightroom Ulsan team to install a fully integrated HARMAN Professional audio system. The team began by treating the venue acoustically, installing sound-absorbing panels across all four walls and finishing them with fabric to control reflections. For speaker placement and system planning, JBL’s Venue Synthesis software replaced traditional CAD modeling, streamlining design and allowing early tuning data preparation that reduced setup time and enhanced coordination with architects.

The audio system included six JBL VTX A6 line array loudspeakers for compact, wide-area coverage; twelve JBL VTX F15 loudspeakers for point-source clarity; and six JBL VTX B15G subwoofers to deliver immersive low-frequency impact. Power and processing came from six Crown I-Tech 4X3500HD amplifiers with built-in DSP, enabling reliable system control and optimized performance. The result was a discreet, precision-engineered setup that matched the venue’s visual ambition with equally compelling sound.

The Result

Lightroom Ulsan opened in April 2025 as a cultural landmark that redefines multimedia storytelling in South Korea. Visitors are now immersed in digital exhibitions where high-resolution visuals and multidimensional sound coalesce into a seamless experience. “The immersive visuals surrounding all four walls were stunning, and I was impressed by the high-quality sound that elevated the entire experience. It felt like I had truly stepped into Hockney’s world, filled with vibrant colors and light,” said Jay Ko from Lightroom Ulsan Baekyangsa.

With its dynamic combination of JBL Professional loudspeakers, Crown amplification, and JBL Venue Synthesis software, the installation sets a new standard for immersive audio in digital art spaces. “The installation at Lightroom Ulsan showcases how HARMAN’s integrated technologies can power immersive art spaces that engage all the senses,” said Amar Subash, VP & GM, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC.
